Culture

How did you prepare for the country’s culture?
I tried to keep an open mind when I started working. Be polite and don’t be to direct. Try to get to know the people you work with, ask them about their family etc. before asking what you want to know directly.

If you stay polite, the people will open their hearts for you!
Did the culture of the country influence your performance during the placement in any way? Yes, I definately had to adapt my Dutch attitude.

Other information

Recommendations on what to do and what not to do: Always be friendly to people you meet. They will do anything for you if you be polite.

As for living, Kuta is very crowded. There are plenty of areas to work and live around the surf school that are more quiet. I lived for 2.5 months in Padang Padang, which is around half an hour- 45 minutes drive. Furthermore, I lived in Seminyak for 1 month, which is around 20 minutes drive. After that, I lived in Kuta, less than 5 minutes away.

Possible other areas to live in are Canggu or Jimbaran. By motorbike, you can cross the whole island. I’d suggest to pick a place you want to live in once you arrived. You will get to know various areas and find something for accommodation easy enough. Book something for your first week, then search for something suitable once you arrived!
Leisure possibilities in the city/surroundings of where the placement took place: There are local and international football teams to join for a game of futsall. There are plenty of bars and parties everywhere in Bali. And don’t worry about shopping, they have everything here!

Put surfing on your To-do list! After all, Bali is famous for the amazing waves and surf scene!
