Sustainable tourism and management department

Brief description of your daily activities: I don’t really have daily activities to work on. The boss wants to do the work all by himself because he doesn’t really trust anyone. There is not really an office or a work place where you start at a specific time and end at a specific time, and so its not that you wait in the office until you get a job. You find the work yourself and so I am now daily working on my company assignments and I am involved in most of the development projects of the other interns/volunteers.
Brief description of your company assignment: My company assignment (which I made up myself) is writing a research paper. In Tanzania there is a big problem that children are dropping out of secondary school. I am writing about the reasons behind this problem and in what way Art in Tanzania can help the children in the neighborhood where Art in Tanzania is operating.
Comment briefly on your supervision by the organization: Any supervision received is as a result of my own requests.

How long in advance? one month. but i had a lot of them already so i would advice take them 3 months before you leave to make sure you have enough time to get them all.

Would you recommend to have a language course prior to this placement? I have Swahili clases beside my working ours.

I have been to Tanzania before so I kind of knew where I was going to.
Did the culture of the country influence your performance during the placement in any way? Yes, everything is very slow and you can’t count on anyones promices.

Other information

Recommendations on what to do and what not to do: I wouldn’t recommend other students to come to this organization. It feels like the boss doesn’t organize work for the interns who come. It is very different than what you would expect from an internship.
Leisure possibilities in the city/surroundings of where the placement took place: Beach, shopping mall, city center.
